Animation Workshop
From Zoetropes to iPads, this is a hands-on, interactive workshop with award-winning local Illustrator and Animator, Luke Newell.
In only one hour, with enthusiastic guidance and support, children will design their own animation with pens, pencils, crayons and collage on pre-printed worksheets… then they have the unique opportunity go to see their animation on THE BIG SCREEN!
Take your artwork home, and the video too! (Sent to a grown-up via email.)
A unique cinematic opportunity for the next generation of film makers and storytellers!
You don't have to have attended our October workshop to join in, Luke will explain all you need to know.

Craft Workshop: Making Finger Puppets
We will use masking tape, gloopy glue, felt, feathers, fabric and all sorts of other goodies to create the five friends who share the broom in Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's story. The workshop will last an hour, and all materials are provided. We will be using child safe craft materials but children must be accompanied by an adult and rolling up sleeves is recommended!
Robyn is an internationally published author and illustrator who spent a decade working as a theatre designer and puppet maker. She has been published by Andersen Press, Egmont, Tiny Owl and Boxer Books. Her theatre designs have toured the country and the world. During February and March Robyn is artist in residence just down the road at Bishop's Stortford Library.
Perfect for little people with a love of Julia Donaldson's stories, especially if you're seeing Room on the Broom at BEAM this half-term!

Dark Skies: The City Dark (PG*) + post film talk by Simon Thorp
Part of the Dark Skies event - a feature documentary about light pollution, premiered at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival. After moving to New York City from rural Maine, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks a simple question “Do we need the stars?”. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, philosophers, historians and lighting designers, the film is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars. Followed by a related talk by lighting designer Simon Thorp who will then provide further insight into the effects of artificial light at night on our surrounding ecology and the steps we can take to minimise our impact. Following this, ticket holders are invited to join the main event taking place in Hertford Castle for an evening of stargazing, educational talks and activities including a mobile planetarium!
